THE COURT OF LOVE
When we talk about the court of love we are not referring to the Family Court or the process of divorce or the probate court, like law, love is a complex concept which has continued to defy any one generally acceptable definition, and though it can not be defined accurately it is undoubtedly a powerful phenomenon which ought to be recognized, codified and guided by strict principles and policies and which like statute no one should say he has understood it until he has been properly tutored on it. The court of love deserves to be a superior court of record with unlimited jurisdiction as far as the heart is concerned; its jurisdiction covers dating, toasting, wooing, courtship, marriage and sex.
Love can be said to be an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment. Love is also said to be a virtue representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affection —"the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another". Love may describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one's self or animals. In English, love refers to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from pleasure ("I loved that meal") to interpersonal attraction ("I love my partner"). "Love" may refer specifically to the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love, to the sexual love of eros, to the emotional closeness of familial love, to the platonic love that defines friendship, or to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love,or to a concept of love that encompasses all of those feelings. This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, compared to other emotional states.Because of the complex and abstract nature of love, discourse on love is commonly reduced to a thought-terminating cliché, and there are a number of common proverbs regarding love, from Virgil's "Love conquers all" to The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love". St. Thomas Aquinas, following Aristotle, defines love as "to will the good of another."Bertrand Russell describes love as a condition of "absolute value," as opposed to relative value. Philosopher Gottfried Leibniz said that love is "to be delighted by the happiness of another."Biologist Jeremy Griffith defines love as "unconditional selflessness". Love is sometimes referred to as being the "international language", overriding cultural and linguistic divisions.
Love is indisputably an integral part of human nature and that is how God has made it, this is the jurisprudential bases of love, consequently, the Greek distinguishes several different senses in which the word "love" is used. For example, Ancient Greek has the words philia, eros, agape, storge, and xenia. However, with Greek (as with many other languages), it has been historically difficult to separate the meanings of these words totally. At the same time, the Ancient Greek text of the Bible has examples of the verb agapo having the same meaning as phileo.
Agape (ἀγάπη agápē) means love in modern-day Greek. The term s'agapo means I love you in Greek. The word agapo is the verb I love. It generally refers to a "pure," ideal type of love, rather than the physical attraction suggested by eros. However, there are some examples of agape used to mean the same as eros. It has also been translated as "love of the soul."
Eros (ἔρως érōs) (from the Greek deity Eros) is passionate love, with sensual desire and longing. The Greek word erota means in love. Plato refined his own definition. Although eros is initially felt for a person, with contemplation it becomes an appreciation of the beauty within that person, or even becomes appreciation of beauty itself. Eros helps the soul recall knowledge of beauty and contributes to an understanding of spiritual truth. Lovers and philosophers are all inspired to seek truth by eros. Some translations list it as "love of the body."
Philia (φιλία philía), a dispassionate virtuous love, was a concept addressed and developed by Aristotle. It includes loyalty to friends, family, and community, and requires virtue, equality, and familiarity. Philia is motivated by practical reasons; one or both of the parties benefit from the relationship. It can also mean "love of the mind."
Storge (στοργή storgē) is natural affection, like that felt by parents for offspring. Xenia (ξενία xenía), hospitality, was an extremely important practice in Ancient Greece. It was an almost ritualized friendship formed between a host and his guest, who could previously have been strangers. The host fed and provided quarters for the guest, who was expected to repay only with gratitude. The importance of this can be seen throughout Greek mythology—in particular, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.
Against this background, it would not be an absurdity or a travesty then in a court of love for a litigant to bring an action on a breach of love, unfortunately there appears to be no statute in this regard, but if a litigant should bring an action to the court assuming that there were statutes and such wrongs could actually be remedied, who then will be worthy or qualified to preside over such court, like in the court of equity the lord chancellor presides, but in this court a love chancellor will be more appropriate. For one to qualify as a love chancellor in my honest opinion he or she must have been in love for at least 20 years.
He would have to be a specialist on love, able to identify love crimes and develop a special system where only crimes specific to love may be tried and hence such persons found culpable may be convicted. Furthermore, special divisions of the court should be established, such as the criminal division of the court to try such crimes as rape and hate murders, on the other hand a civil division to try less serious matters as cheating, failure to call, failure to visit, failure to show care etc. it is pertinent to add that these acts must be interpreted literally.
It is pertinent to note that there has been case law as far as this court is concerned, such notable cases include Romeo and Juliet, Samson and Delilah etc. Unfortunately too, there appears to be only one statute in this regard, which is the bible. In order to ensure a good justice system for this court, a court of appeal and a supreme court may have to be put in place to upturn cases which are fundamentally flawed.
Lust on the other hand can be defined as a desire to gratify the senses bodily appetite. This vivid concept has cast a very dark shadow on the concept of love, flowing from the above, it can be seen from overwhelming evidence that people have seen the valentines day celebration as a green light to engage in sexual relationships and have failed to open their eyes to differentiate between love and lust not just with the events on the 14th of February but every other day. From the stand point of educating the public I must advice that young men and women learn how to differentiate between both concepts, and ensure that they engage and promote the events of this day to as much as possible be responsible and remember that there is always an aftermath. Whatever act one decides to engage in will be unveiled at the end of the day, I leave the rest to the court of public opinion to decide. HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY
