BOOK REVIEW
The book RUFFLED BUTTERFLIES is a
146 page book, divided into 13 short stories. The author’s style of writing can
be described as comical and he also generously employs the use of paronomasias
and incorporates metaphors among other figures of speech. Even though every
theme attempts to address a particular issue and in some cases a particular
personality trait, the reader may even identify him/herself in one of the
characters of these short stories. The stories presented in this book can be
related to every aspect of life. The more one read's the book the more engrossed
one gets and the more one understands the theme, style, setting and plot.
Among all the stories, I think I personally
connected more with the one entitled ELECTRONIC LISTS, especially where he
wrote about some glaring realities of our everyday lives as citizens of
Nigeria, he portrayed the realities so well that every Nigerian can identify
with, such as where he wrote “the potholes were indiscernible, and a
miscalculation could see him losing his exhaust pipe in the mud. He felt the
bottom plate of the car grate against the bumpy road and it felt like it was
his belly rubbing against the hard road”. Coincidentally, in the next paragraph
he wrote about the garbage heaps sprawling in every nook and cranny of the
country, everywhere as well as the unwholesome acts of excreting in the open by
children supervised by their complicit mothers. Then the new wave of craze for
football betting, which he termed “the bettors or football investors”.
The author attempts to capture the
ever dynamic and challenging world that exists within African albeit Nigerian
culture especially as it relates to marriage and family, to this end, each
story comes with its morals, its lessons and values and mostly on a positive
note, thereby sending a positive message to the readers. I personally found it
a very interesting read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a
Nigerian novel with plenty of comic reliefs to savour.
