JOE BIDEN’S BALANCING ACT

The inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States of America was quite a far cry from what was obtainable in previous inaugurations by his predecessors. Evidently, it was not only done without pump and pageantry but it was also done without Trump. No doubt the covid 19 pandemic may have also taken away some of the shine from the inauguration as the death toll continues to rise in the U.S. Obviously, the insecurity which has characterized the U.S is another factor, especially the January 6th attack on Capitol Hill. Personally I don’t envy the duo because president JOE BIDEN and vice president KAMALA HARRIS have a huge task ahead. JOE BIDEN will definitely have to do a balancing act between the white supremacists and the black lives matter, between Russia and China, between Pro-life and Pro-abortion, between Pro-homosexual and Pro-Heterosexuals, Pro-vaccine and anti-vaccine, the list is endless. The US relationship with China and Russia will be something to watch in this administration. However, the underlying message in President Biden’s inaugural speech appears to be Trump and how he has misruled the country. The Biden administration will definitely be a departure from that of Donald Trump, who appeared to have held a very colourful fair-well with his supporters. In contrast to Trump, Joe Biden appears to have a soft spot for Africans having appointed several into his cabinet, including some Nigerians. This is a plus for Africa and Africans considering that injustice and deprivations against blacks in America have been perpetrated unperturbed. Movements such as black lives matter movement which erupted as a result of the killing of a black man George Floyd, spread all over the U.S.A and even inspired similar protests like End Sars in Nigeria, in order to address such injustice. Unlike Trump, Joe Biden may reopen ties with other countries especially Africans, Arabs and Mexicans. Then the issue of the undocumented immigrants will also be assuaged, who knows the current restrictions on refugees and the outright ban on visas to countries like Syria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Lybia, Yemen as well. International relations today will not be complete without looking at the issue of the Covid-19 pandemic which has crossed international borders and broken every restriction. It can also be argued that it was the poor handling of the pandemic by Donald Trump that became his albatross, considering that the way and manner with which he handled the pandemic left much to be desired, coming back to the inauguration every one tried to observe the Covid 19 protocol however, some could be seen not wearing face masks, hugging and exchanging handshakes with one another. In disparity to Trump biding has a lot of experience on his side being the 18th longest serving senator in the U.S. history and one time vice-president, one expects that he will be more cautious in his utterances, he may also undo most if not all of trumps executive orders. However, some of these policy reversals will have to go through senate which has majority of republicans. The positive side is that Joe Biden is experienced and will extend a leaf to the republicans in the senate. President Biden no doubt has hit the ground running by rolling out a plan against Covid-19. How this is going to impact the U.S. is another bowl of soup. The Biden administration has plans to make the U.S.100% clean energy economy with net-zero emissions by 2050. The administration also plans to decarbonizes the U.S. power sector by 2035. The U.S. is set to rejoin the Paris Climate Accord as a crucial step in the fight against climate change. This administration most definitely will embrace the policies of former president Obama, some even posit that Joe Biden will be walking in the shadows of his former boss, while others argue that he may change allegiance and chat a fresh path. In Nigeria one thing remains sacrosanct, we are hopeful that U.S. support will be better felt under Biden’s administration and that finally Ngozi Okonjo Iweala’s appointment as the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will be confirmed.
